Abstract
The implication of adenylyl sulfate 3’.phosphate in the synthesis of the sulfated acid mucopolysaccharides has been well documented (l-6). However, the nature of the sulfation step, although studied extensively, is still obscure. Although the introduction of new techniques in nucleotide chemistry has resulted in the synthesis of many of the possible precursors of the acid mucopolysaccharides (7, S), a practical synthesis of adenylyl sulfate 3’-phosphate has not previously been accomplished. In order to complete the spectrum of the immediate precursors of the sulfated acid mucopolysaccharides, the synthesis of adenylyl sulfate 3’-phosphate was undertaken. The successful synthesis of this compound as well as an improved synthesis of adenylyl sulfate is the subject of the present report.
