Abstract
Abstract Well defined diblock and triblock copolymers of butadiene and 2-isopropenylpyridine have been synthesized by anionic polymerization, using a difunctional lithium initiator. The structure of such a dilithium derivative was characterized by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and the reaction of the two lithium active centres was demonstrated. The characterization of the copolymers (by gel permeation chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance) and the study of their thermomechanical properties (by differential scanning calorimetry and viscoelasticimetry) support the block structure and show that these materials would display better mechanical properties, at high temperature, than conventional styrene-butadiene-styrene and styrene-isoprene-styrene.
