Abstract
Crystal phases formed by evaporation of water solutions containing RbIO 4 and RbOH at molar ratios from 1 : 1 to 1: 2 under various conditions were studied. Five earlier unknown salts were isolated: RbIO 4 . 4H 2 O, Rb 5 [H 2 I 3 O 1 4 ], Rh 2 [H 3 IO 6 ], Rb 4 [H 2 I 2 O 1 0 ].4H 2 O, and Rh 4 [H 2 I 2 O 1 0 .6H 2 O. Thermal decomposition of the last three compounds yielded a proton-free salt, namely, Rb 4 [I 2 O 9 ]. For Rb 5 H 2 I 3 O 1 4 and Rh 2 H 3 IO 6 , solid-state synthesis methods were also developed. The rubidium periodates synthesized contain both mononuclear (H 3 IO 2 - 6 ) and polynuclear (I 2 O 4 - 9 , H 2 I 2 O 4 - 1 0 , H 2 I 3 O 5 - 1 4 ) anions with I 7 + octahedrally surrounded by iron atoms. Compounds Rb 5 H 2 I 3 O 1 4 , Rb 2 H 3 IO 6 , and Rb 4 H 2 I 2 O 1 0 .4H 2 O, stable under ordinary conditions, have appreciable proton conductivity.
