Abstract
Abstract Cotinine, the important tobacco alkaloid, is synthesized from nicotine by electrochemical generated superoxide anion (O− ). Superoxide ion is produced by the electrolytic reduction of species containing dissolved molecular oxygen on mercury pool in dimethylformamide (DMF) and tetra-n-butyl ammonium perchlorate (TBAP). The anode material and current density plays a significant role in the production of cotinine alkaloid. The probable mechanism involving the role of superoxide ion is presented.
