Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic, and Nano-Metal Chemistry
Abstract
Reaction of N-methylpropane-1,3-diamine with 3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylaldehyde and 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde, respectively, in methanol, forms two new Schiff bases, 2-bromo-4-chloro-6-[(3-methylaminopropylimino)methyl]phenol (L1) and 2-ethoxy-6-[(3-methylaminopropylimino)methyl]phenol (L2). Two new halido-coordinated zinc(II) complexes, [ZnL1Cl2] (1) and [ZnL2I2]·0.5CH3OH (2), derived from the Schiff bases, have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), and elemental analysis. Complex (1) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c, with a = 17.0640(10) Å, b = 13.238(2) Å, c = 14.843(2) Å, β = 100.888(3)°, V = 3292.6(7) Å3, Z = 8. Complex (2) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, with a = 15.7238(5) Å, b = 14.6918(5) Å, c = 18.4250(6) Å, β = 114.7590(10)°, V = 3865.1(2) Å3, Z = 2. The Zn atom in each complex is coordinated by one imino N and one phenolic O atoms of a Schiff-base ligand, and by two halide atoms (Cl for 1, and I for 2), forming a tetrahedral geometry. The Schiff bases and the complexes were assayed for antibacterial activities.
