Abstract
Ethyl cyanoethylphenylacetate [ethyl 2-cyano-2-phenylbutanoate] (IV) -an important intermediate in the synthesis of the drugs hexamidine and phenobarbital -is obtained from benzyl cyanide (I) and diethyl carbonate (II) in the presence of sodium ethanolate followed by the ethylation of the sodium salt of ethyl cyanophenylacetate (III) so obtained with ethyl bromide in accordance with the following scheme [1-3]:
