Abstract
Abstract 1. 1. Methyl hexadeca-4,7,10-trienoate (16:3ω6), methyl eicosa-8, 11,14-trienoate (20:3ω6), methyl docosa-10, 13, 16-trienoate (22:3ω6) and methyl docosa-6,9,12,15-tetraenoate (22: 4ω7) were prepared by total synthesis. 2. 2. The above methyl esters, along with methyl linoleate and methyl arachidonate, were fed to rats raised on a fat-deficient diet. The liver lipid fatty acid compositions, as determined by gas-liquid chromatography, were compared with the fatdeficient controls. The 16:3ω6 was converted to longer chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of the ω-6 family. The 22:3ω6 was partially degraded to give an increase in the level of both 20: 3ω6 and 20:4ω6 in the liver lipids. Only small amounts of 22:3ω6 were incorporated directly into liver lipids. The 22:4ω7 was also partially degraded to give an increase in the level of 20:4ω7. The 22:4ω7 was not incorporated directly into liver lipids or chain elongated.
