Abstract
Physiologically active compounds, 5-methyl-2-phenyl-2-hexenal (1) from Idaho potatoes and related compounds, 4-methyl-2-phenyl-2-pentenal (2), 2-methyl-4-phenylpentanal (3) and 2-methyl-2-pentenal (4) were synthesized and used as starting compounds for the synthesis of twenty-one compounds through condensation with o-, m- and p-toluoyl chlorides. The derivatives obtained were examined for capacity as whitening agents and growth-regulation. (4h) derived from (4) were found to be inhibited by tyrosinase by 71%. This inhibitory action considerably exceeded that of arbutin used in commercial cosmetics. Seventeen derivatives were found effective for weed control in a field (50g/a), and showed particularly strong inhibitory action forward growth of Monochoria vaginalis.
