Abstract
A novel type of optically active N-[[[N'-(α-methylbenzyl)amino]carbonyl]methyl]maleimide (MBCM) was synthesized from maleic anhydride, glycine, and (R)-(+)-α-methylbenzylamine. Radical homopolymerizations of MBCM were performed in several solvents at 70 and 150°C for 22 h to give optically active polymers having [α] 25 D = 50.3-62.5°. Radical copolymerizations of MBCM (M 1 ) were performed with styrene (St, M 2 ) and methyl methacrylate (MMA, M 2 ) in dioxane at 70°C. The reactivity ratios and the Alfrey-Prive values were found to be r 1 = 0.083, r 2 = 0.30, Q= 0.72 and e= 1.12 for the MBCM/St system and r 1 = 0.19, r 2 = 0.95, Q= 1.32 and e= 1.71 for the MBCM/MMA system
