Abstract
The synthesis and chemical end spectroscopic characterization of 1-bromo-4-(bromoacetyl)naphthalene (BBAN), a thiol-reactive phosphorescent probe, is described. The energy and shape of the near-ultraviolet n-π * absorption bend of BBAN in simple solvents, mixed solvents, end within certain biomolecular complexes are shown to be sensitive to both general and specific solvent effects. Anoxic solutions of BBAN exhibit strong structured phosphorescence emission with little, if zny, prompt fluorescence, suggesting that an efficient intersystem crossing mechanism exists within the molecule(...)
