Abstract
The synthesis of MCM-41-type materials functionalized with 3-mercaptopropyl(methyl) and/or methyl groups has been performed by co-condensation of the corresponding alcoxysilanes and tetramethoxysilane in the presence of CTAB and different amino acids. The presence of the organic moieties in the resulting material has been assessed by 29Si MAS NMR. N2 adsorption and TEM studies of the samples synthesized from amino-acid-containing gels reveal the presence of large irregular mesopores that permeate the entire bulk of the particles, in addition to the conventional mesopores in hexagonal arrangement. The simultaneous presence of methyl functional groups along with organic molecules containing at least one acid group is required for the formation of such spongelike mesoporosity.
