Abstract
What is the topic of this review? Nutrient absorption in the gastrointestinal tract requires membrane proteins embedded in the apical membrane of epithelial cells that allow bulk quantities of nutrients, such as monosaccharides and amino acids, to be moved into epithelial cells. Very recently, a new function of the transporters as nutrient sensors mediating peptide hormone release from enteroendocrine cells has been discovered. What advances does it highlight? The review covers recent advances in membrane transporter functions for the absorption and sensing of dietary peptides and sugars and their putative interplay.
