Abstract
Abstract When 4,8-dihydroxy-2,6-dioxabicyclo (3.3.0) octane (IR, 4S, 5R, 8R) is indirectly electrooxidized to the monoketone 4-hydroxy-2,6-dioxabicyclo (3.3.0) octan-8-one (1S, 4S, 5R) using sodium bromide, the use of water as solvent makes analysis difficult. We suggest here an analytical method for continuous monitoring of the reaction medium, plus a method of separating the resultant products. We also describe an efficient method of eliminating sodium bromide at the end of the experiment. Finally, the mass spectrometry and carbon 13 nuclear magnetic resonance allow a formal description to be made of the products formed by oxidation.
