Abstract
Precise first-order rate constants for the solvolysis of tert-butyl and tert-pentyl chlorides have been determined in water at temperatures up to 50°C for butyl chloride and 41°C for pentyl chlordie. The results have been compared with previously published data on the hydrolysis of the two chlorides at lower temperatures, and, on detailed analysis, the results have provided a reliable picture of the temperature variation of the specific heat of activation (ΔC≠p) for these hydrolyses.
