Abstract
The thermal decomposition of hydrated cerous oxalate was studied in the temperature range 30° to 1000°C by measuring the surface area of the products and mass change at various stages. The products were characterized by infrared absorption and X-ray diffraction analyses. Two peaks in the surface area vs. temperature curve were observed. The first peak was due to the decomposition of the oxalate, which caused an increase in surface area, followed by partial crystallization of the oxide which reduced the surface area. The increase in surface area in the region 440° to 650°C was attributed to the decomposition of the carbonaceous materials dispersed in the oxide matrix; it was followed by a decrease in area due to bulk sintering of the oxide.
