Abstract
Sumatriptan is a selective 5HT1 receptor agonist, highly effective in the acute treatment of migraine attacks (1). There is controversy as to the primary mode of action of the anti-migraine effect: activation of post-synaptic 5HT1 receptors on muscle cells within the vessel wall causing vasoconstriction (2, 3), or activation of pre-synaptic 5HT1 receptors on intracranial perivascular terminals of the trigeminal nerve blocking neural transmission and the release of vasoactive neuropeptides (4).
