Abstract
We have found that trifluoromethyltrimethylsilane in the presence of tris(dimethylamino)sulfonium trimethyldifluorosilicate (TASF) acts as a source of an unhydrated fluoride ion [I] in the perfluoroalkylation of perfluoroaromatic compounds. This reaction proceeds readily in THF at 20~ In the presence of a slight molar excess of CF3SiMe3, pentafluoropyridine and octafluorotoluene are converted into the monoalkylation products, while decafluorodiphenyl gives a -2:1 mixture of perfluorinated 4-methyldiphenyl and 4,4"-dimethyldiphenyl. Gas-liquid chromatography and 19F NMR spectroscopy indicated 40-70% yields with about 60% conversion of the starting perfluoroarenes.
