Abstract
Abstract The infrared spectrum in the solid state and the polarized Raman spectra of aqueous solutions of trimethylamine oxide dihydrate have been measured. The normal vibrations of trimethylamine oxide have also been calculated using the Urey-Bradley—Shimanouchi potential function with all internal coordinates except for torsional motions. The observed frequencies have been assigned based upon the polarization properties of Raman lines and the results of the calculation. As a result an assignment by G iguere and C hin has partly been revised. The observed frequencies and the force constants show that the nitrogen atom of trimethylamine oxide is essentially tetravalent. The CN bond character is influenced by the oxygen atom which is more electronegative than a nitrogen atom.
