Abstract
This article deals with-urethane and isocyanate technology as applied to adhesive bonding. Urethanes give adhesives toughness and elasticity. They find practical application in bonding to metal substrates via modification with organofunctional silanes, to elastomer substrates via substrate chlorination, heat and excess isocyanate, to polyvinyl chloride with little or no additional aid, to cured plastics, such as FRP, via catalyst-primer directly at the interface and to thermoplastic via addition of thermoplastic etchants in the adhesive. Isocyanates offer the capability of cross-linking and substrate coupling to the adhesive technologist. They have found practical application and acceptance only when skillfully formulated with other adhesion-imparting polymers and coreactants.
