Abstract
The synthetic organophosphonates 3‐aminopropylphosphonic acid and 4‐aminobutylphosphonic acid were utilized as sole nitrogen sources by an environmental bacterial isolate by a previously unreported pathway which did not involve cleavage of the carbon‐phosphorus bond. The organism also appeared to possess a novel organophosphenate uptake system which was independent of the phosphate status of the cell.
