Abstract
Abstract The structure of the complex of 3-oxo-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octane with pentachlorophenol (OAO PCP) has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystals are monoclinic, space group C2/c, with a = 24.89(2), b = 9.667(6), c = 18.14(1) A, β = 133.97(4)° and Z = 8. The structure solved by direct methods has been refined to R = 0.041 for 2810 non-zero reflections. The N⋯O distance of 2.514(5) A is the shortest length of an NHO intermolecular hydrogen bond found so far. The protonic absorption continuum spreading in the 250–1500 cm−1 region is characteristic for the shortest hydrogen bonds in which the proton motion may be described by a potential energy curve with an unsymmetrical single minimum.
