Abstract
Although many new /34actam antibiotics for parenteral use have been developed during the last years, there is still a need for new compounds of this class of antibiotics which can be administered orally and have enhanced activity against particular groups of bacteria, especially gram-negative organisms. In this paper we report the results of a study on the in vitro activity of a new orally absorbable cephalosporin. Cefetamet pivoxyl (Ro 15-8075) is the pivaloyloxymethylester of the semisynthetic desacetoxy cephalosporin cefetamet (Ro 15-8074) (Figure 1). After absorption of cefetamet pivoxyl the ester group is split off enzymatically giving rise to the active cephalosporanic acid cefetamet. We compared the in vitro activity of cefetamet with that of other oral cephalosporins, cefazolin, doxycycline and cotrimoxazole against a variety of bacteria.
