Abstract
Abstract 4-Methyl-3-heptanone (I) has been isolated from the mandibular glands of Pogonomyrmex barbatus (F. Smith). It is also found in P. californicus (Buckley), P. desertorum Wheeler, P. occidentalis (Cresson), P. rugosus Emery, and P. badius (Latreille). This ketone appears to function as an alarm pheromone.
