Abstract
A study was conducted to determine the rate of mercury volatilization from soils freshly amended with mercury compounds. Mercuric nitrate, mercuric chloride, mercuric acetate, mercuric oxide, and mercuric sulfide were used in conjunction with three soils; a loamy sand, a sandy loam, and a clay loam. Mercury was evolved from all combinations and was shown to be dependent upon the solubility of the mercury compound and possibly the texture of the soil.
