When we gaze up at the night sky, we're looking at light that has traveled across vast distances of space and time. This raises a fascinating question that many astronomy and astrophysics experts have pondered: Are we actually looking at stars that no longer exist? Three specialists in stellar astronomy provide evidence-based perspectives on this cosmic time delay and what it means for our view of the universe. Their answers illuminate not just the stars themselves, but our place in the cosmic timeline.Michael Boyle has answered Extremely UnlikelyAn expert from Cornell University in Astrophysics, Astronomy, MathematicsFor the most part, the stars you see with the naked eye (that is, without a telescope) are still alive. These stars are usually no more than about 10,000 light years away, so the light we see left them about 10,000 years ago.

Looking up at the stars at night it is easy to imagine that we are sitting at the center of the universe. Astronomers have shown that this is not the case – we are not even at the center of our own solar system. So where is the center of the universe? We asked 6 experts in astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology, ‘Does the universe have a center?’, here is what they said. This consensus is based on 6 experts answers from this question: Does the Universe have a center? How did the universe begin?Professor Robert Russell, a cosmology expert from the Graduate Theological Union in the USA, refers to the beginning of the universe as “‘t=0’, an event 13.8 billion years ago when the universe was of zero size, infinite temperature and infinite density, the moment the universe began expanding”. This moment is called the ‘Big Bang’. This period of cosmic inflation, which lasted just fractions of a second, resulted in the creation of the universe. If the universe is expanding, it makes sense to assume that the center of the universe is the position where the Big Bang happened, however it is not that simple.

Check out this answer from Consensus:The question of whether the universe has a center remains a topic of ongoing research and debate. While the Galactic Center of the Milky Way is a well-studied region with a massive black hole at its core, the broader universe appears to lack a single, definitive center. Observational data, such as the uniformity of the CMB radiation and the implications of Hubble's law, support the view of an unbounded universe without a central point. Future research and advancements in observational technology may provide further insights into this profound question. The question of whether the universe has a center has intrigued scientists and philosophers for centuries. Historically, various models have placed Earth or the Sun at the center of the universe. However, modern cosmology, supported by extensive observational data and theoretical models, provides a more nuanced understanding of the universe's structure. This article explores the evidence and theories regarding the existence of a center in the universe. The Galactic Center

Check out this answer from Consensus:The evidence from various models and experimental studies strongly supports the presence of icy cores in Uranus and Neptune. These cores are surrounded by complex ice layers composed of ionized water and ammonia, and potentially carbon in the form of diamonds. Understanding the internal structures of these ice giants not only provides insights into their formation and evolution but also helps in the study of similar exoplanets in other star systems.Uranus and Neptune, the ice giants of our solar system, have long intrigued scientists with their unique compositions and structures. Unlike the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are believed to have significant amounts of "ices" in their interiors. This article explores the evidence and models that suggest the presence of icy cores in these distant planets.Structure of Uranus and Neptune

Check out this answer from Consensus:Based on the provided research papers, there is no direct evidence or mention of planets orbiting Betelgeuse. The focus of the studies is primarily on the classification, distance, and characteristics of Betelgeuse as a red star. Further research would be required to determine the presence of any planetary bodies around Betelgeuse.Betelgeuse, a prominent red supergiant star in the constellation Orion, has been a subject of fascination for astronomers due to its size, brightness, and variability. A common question that arises is whether Betelgeuse has any planets orbiting it.Key Insights

Check out this answer from Consensus:Based on the current research, it is clear that stars do not orbit planets. Instead, planets orbit stars, including single stars and binary star systems. The gravitational dynamics observed in these studies consistently show that the more massive body (the star) remains the central point around which the less massive body (the planet) orbits. The question of whether a star can orbit a planet is intriguing and challenges our conventional understanding of celestial mechanics. Typically, we observe planets orbiting stars due to the significant mass difference between the two. However, the dynamics of celestial bodies can sometimes present unique scenarios that merit exploration.Key Insights
